The Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcome (ECHO) Program

ECHO is a large research program supported by the National Institutes of Health that aims to improve the health of children and teens in the United States. ECHO has enrolled more than 50,000 adults, babies, children, and teens to partner with researchers so we can learn how things in our lives (our environment) affect how healthy our children and teens are. When we know this, we can make choices to improve health.

For the past seven years we have been working with all the ECHO teams to recruit and assess children and their families. This study is funded by the Office of the Director at NIH and has been running since 2016. In 2024, ECHO launched its second 7-year cycle.

You can visit the ECHO Study website for more information.

3. The Adolescence Project

Surprisingly, very little is known about how children’s hormones change during puberty. Since 2017, this project has focused on hormone changes and how these changes are related to development in other areas, like school and friendships. We can help answer these questions because we have been interviewing families for many years and have seen your children grow from infancy through childhood. Having this information can help us understand how children handle the transition to puberty and grow into their high school years. This study is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

COVID-19 Projects

Adolescence COVID-19 Project

This project is focused on the impact of COVID-19 on teens. Eligible children will be asked to share their experiences with COVID-19 and related events over the course of one year. This project will be running from 2020 to 2021.

COVID-19 Child Well-Being Project

This short-term project examines the importance of family, community, and school as it relates to positive health in children. We hope to better understand what social and emotional supports need to be in place for families and communities. This project will be running from 2020 to 2021.
